Butterfly Theme: Our butterfly larvae have arrived and we are completing activities around this theme. We have 48 vials containing almost 90 larvae. The children are very excited and have given many of them names. We will watch them daily as they grow and change into butterflies. The whole process will take approximately three weeks.

Retesting: In Language Arts, I am in the process of rechecking students individually in the areas of beginning sounds, rhyming, initial sound substitution, word recognition, reading fluency, comprehension, and dictation. All students in Grade One are progressing, but each in their own unique manner. Thank you so much for the dedicated work you are doing with your child at home. This consistent support is a wonderful predictor of your child’s success.

Monday is our 31st day in school.

Independent Readers---2 Independent readers will be going home with your little ones this week. UnderThe Orange Umbrella and Ducks Can’t Count.
Many students can read these books unassisted but many need lots of help to attend to the pictures and follow the print. The key is to read them every day and to watch your child improve in his/her ability to follow the printed word.

Friday is a professional development day for teachers. No school for students.
A good day to do some extra reading!!!! Our 5th Spelling Quiz will be on Thursday.

Reading levels are in the process of being rechecked. We had an activity afternoon on Friday. The children were involved in cooperative games during period 4 and they watched part of Casper during period 5. This allowed me to do valuable observations and I also managed to recheck the reading levels of 7 students. I am very impressed with your children! I plan to recheck the remaining 8 students this week. PLEASE keep reading with them!

Math: Please practice using the 2-10 Frames on the back of the Agenda!!1 Please email me if you are unsure about how to use them. They are very important and your child needs to be very familiar with them.

Monday is our 8th day in school. We have 91 more days to count to our 100th Day!

Items taped into the Agenda
2 Ten Frames - - on the back cover. This page is very important as we learn to add and subtract.
It is important to follow the instructions.

100’s Chart -- Throughout the whole year, we will learn to count to 100. We will count forward and count back, as well as read random numbers. We will learn to count by 2,5, and 10 to 100.

112 Sight Words -- The expectation is that your child will learn to fluently read all 112 words, by the end of Grade One.

Alphabet Check: A review of the upper and lowercase alphabet is being worked on and will go home so that you can help your child practice any letters needing attention.

Baggy Words: Words we read in our stories, to be practiced and returned to school each day.

Sentences: During this week the children will be introduced to and receive a copy of sentences constructed using vocabulary from stories and poems we have read. These need to be practiced
as often as you see necessary. It is important that your child points to every word as s/he reads.

Spelling Words: The children will be introduced to our spelling program and we will begin working on our first spelling unit activities this week. The words will not be tested until next Friday, so that the children can have time to adjust to this routine. Tests will occur on Fridays unless a change is necessary and you will know in advance.

Math—We are working quite a bit with identifying, creating and extending various patterns.
Do some patterning at home by using common household items such as cutlery, or by looking
for patterns in clothing or on wallpaper. Refer to the family note in the Home Guide.

Welcome to Grade One! This is an extremely important year in your child’s life with many adjustments---a full day of school, eating in the cafeteria, and many other firsts. These are big steps and your child will be undoubtedly tired by evening.

Getting organized and establishing routines are important steps towards success.. Your child will be bringing home color-coded folders and baggy books, etc. The extra supplies sent in will be safely stored until your child needs them.

**Some Language Arts materials you will gradually see coming home are:

*Across the Water An anthology – very old but a very good resource.
*Swing In --Our newer anthology
*Baggy Books Books which your child should be able to read independently.
Appropriate independent levels will be identified as soon as possible and adjustments made.
*Sight Words - A baggy containing sight vocabulary.
*Poetry & Rhyme - Weekly poems. Many selections are also in the newer Nelson Anthologies.
*Alphabet Review - A checkup to identify letters known and those needing review.
*Sentence Book - Consisting of sentences using vocabulary from stories we read..
*Math---We are beginning with the concepts of patterning and number.

*Puzzlemania and Highlights forms: Please sign and return these forms whether you check yes or no.

*SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB - Our first order book order forms will go home on Monday and an order will be called in on Sept. 14th.

Tuesday is our 23rd day in school. 77 more days to our 100th Day in School! We try to count to our daily number by 1, 2, 3, and 5. We count back to 0 and talk about odd and even numbers.
Math - We are developing number sense.

Collections: Each child is invited to bring in a collection of items to share with the class any day this week. S/he should be able to explain, and answer ‘who, what, when, where, why, how’ questions about his/her collection.

Science Backpack—The “Is It Alive” backpack is making it’s rounds in our classroom. Several children have already had the opportunity to take the bag home. Please follow the directions and return the bag to school for your child to share with his/her classmates.

Fire Prevention Week: This is Fire Prevention Week. The theme is “Protect Your Family From Fire.” On Thursday we will have a coordinated visit from the Association of Fire Chiefs and Firefighters with a special presentation using a model home and a demonstration of fire hazards and preventative safety measures. Our local Volunteer Firefighters will also take part in this life-saving venture.

Baggy Books – All children will hopefully have their reading levels checked at least once, by the end of this week or early next week. Reading material will be matched to independent reading ability. As well, sight word checks will begin in the next little while.

Fire Prevention: Thank you for discussing fire safety with your child at home. If you have not done so, please make escape route plans with your family just in case you would have to deal with an unfortunate smoke or fire situation. Complete and practice your own escape route. Use the grid sent home or sketch one of your own.

Math - We began reading numbers 1 to 20 in order and out of sequence. We are doing lots of number activities and have begun individual number booklets to reinforce our number skills.

This is our14th day in school. 86 days to our 100th Day in School! No school on Tuesday-PD Day.

Scholastic Book Order - The October order will be called in on Friday of this week.

Alphabet Check: The alphabet check which was sent home, was done independently. The children had access to the alphabet on their desks and above the board as well as other places in our classroom. It was perfectly acceptable to reference these resources and impressive to see the children use them. Please provide a little extra assistance on areas of concern.

Fire Prevention: We are developing fire safety awareness. The children are aware of procedures at school. You need to have a plan at home as well. Please read and review the materials coming home over the next little while and practice your own home escape route. Use the grid which is being sent home or one of your own to plan a safe escape for your family.

Math—We are finishing our unit on patterning. However, patterning will be ongoing in all mathematical concepts which your child will encounter throughout his/her life. Please continue to observe patterns in your everyday experiences. It will help your child develop an awareness and solid foundation for the skills which need to be developed.
We are now working on number representation to 20.

Monday is our 9th day in school. We have 91 more days to count to our 100th Day!

Agenda – 2 Ten Frames and instructions have been taped to the back cover. This page is very important and will be used in school and at home all through the year. A 100’s Chart and a list of 112 Sight Words have also been taped in. The expectation is that your child will learn to fluently read all 112 words, and count by 1,2,5, and 10 to 100, as well as read random numbers in the 100’s chart, by the end of Grade One.

Alphabet Check: A review of the upper and lowercase alphabet will be completed this week and a copy will go home so that you can help your child practice any letters needing attention.

Sentences: During this week the children will be introduced to and receive a copy of sentences constructed using vocabulary from stories and poems we have read. These need to be practiced
as often as you see necessary. It is really important that your child points to every word as s/he reads.

Spelling Words: The children will be introduced to our spelling program and we will begin working on our first spelling unit activities this week. The words will not be tested until next Friday, so that the children can have time to adjust to this routine. Tests will occur on Fridays unless a change is necessary and you will know in advance.

Math—We have worked quite a bit with identifying, creating and extending various
patterns. We will continue to work with patterning during this week. Do some patterning
at home by using common household items such as cutlery, or by looking for patterns in
clothing or on wallpaper. Refer to the family note in the Home Guide.
